Happy Pi Day!

Here I am with my obligatory Pi Day post for 2010. This Pi Day is much different from last year's for me. Last year I was pregnant with my first child, wearing a pi shirt that Chris made for me, and making gluten-free pies for a pi day party. This year I have a 10 month old son, and to celebrate pi day I am ... wearing the pi shirt. And that is all. This mamma has too much going on to bake a gluten-free pie, or even to notice when the clock hits 1:59 on 3/14.

So since I have little to say about the holiday this year, I will leave you in better hands than mine, with Instructables' guide to Pi Day. For those of you who are able, eat a piece of pizza pi or a slice of apple pi for me, 'kay?

Happy Pi Day!

Pi Day is the perfect excuse to eat pi(e) with friends. We had a good time, and now I am stuffed full of allergen-free apple pi(e). Well, allergen free if you aren't allergic to apples or butter or rice flour or sugar. Yum!

Chris made the shirt last night for me. He made an iron-on stencil with freezer paper, and sprayed bleach water on it to make the design. A quick DIY tshirt project.

Get Ready for Pi Day! Tomorrow is 3.14

This great photo is from zenwerx, which will also inform you of the value of pi to 4 million digits. Now that's dedication.

While I won't be making a pie quite this fancy, I am making a couple allergen-free pies tomorrow in celebration of Pi Day, and a few people are coming over to help us eat them. I'm going to make a pumpkin pie just because it's my favorite, and an apple pie. I was going to make a blueberry pie but blueberries are just too expensive... I could spend about $18 on enough blueberries, or $3 on enough apples... not really a tough choice this time around!

So what are YOU doing for Pi Day?

Square Root Day - and I missed it!

I've been eagerly looking forward to Pi Day, which falls on a Saturday this year so I think I'll bake a gluten-free pie (blueberry? apple? pumpkin? I haven't decided yet) and wear a shirt with a pi symbol on it, if Chris makes it in time. But much to my dismay, I missed Square Root Day, which was yesterday, and I didn't even know it. Miss Emily alerted me to the missed holiday this morning. Maybe I could have cut a sweet potato into squares and sauted them for dinner. (And wish everyone a Happy Square Root Day, which is all you really need to do to celebrate a holiday).

So now that we're planning ahead, is anyone else gonna do something fun for Pi Day? Maybe crochet a pi scarf? More importantly, who wants to come over to my house for some pie? (Don't make me eat it all myself!)

Pi day!

It's my favorite math-alicious day again, and I almost MISSED it. Luckily some random website tipped me off. So I went out looking for pi-themed crochet, and I discovered that last year's post about pi day is in google's top 10 list for a search of pi day crochet ... go figure. I'm a nerd. (For those of you who have no idea what Pi Day is, including all my coworkers, here's the wikipedia page to explain it all.)

In honor of the day, here are a couple of pi-themed crochet things I found:

More Pi

First of all, I am saddened that Google doesn't have a cheesy logo modification for Pi Day (you know, like they do for New Year's and Chinese New Year and stuff)... But Dinosaur Comics made up for it by talking about Pi Day today... and finally, I'm quite pleased to say that I've converted Angela to the greatness of the day. Speaking of Angela, she's one of my favorite people ever, so you should read her new blog. It will undoubtably be fun for all!

Pi Day

Man, I wish I had this shirt for Pi Day. Not that I'm allowed to wear t-shirts when I'm teaching, but, maybe I'd be able to get away with it for a special occassion. Not that it matters since I don't have this shirt.

And speaking of Pi Day, thinkgeek.com tells me that 3.14 is also Albert Einsteins birthday. How cool is that?

my favorite month of the year? perhaps!

I think this may be my favorite month of every year. March is a great month anyways... in the south it's when everything is blooming and green and the temperature is nice ... and on top of that, THIS week is just filled with random fake holidays - some of my favorite fake holidays at that! Let us start with Wednesday, 3.14, which is Pi Day... the day you eat pie and act like a dork by wishing people a happy Pi Day and no one knows what you're talking about. This is immediately followed by 3.15, the day Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC (you know, "Beware the Ides of March!") ... finally, we have 3.17, Saint Patrick's Day, the day you're suppose to wear green and talk about the "Luck o' the Irish" and eat shamrock cookies. This is especially a fun day in Savannah, because they have a huge St. Patrick's Day parade, everything closes down, and everyone hangs out outside and drinks too much and wears silly green attire. The fountains have all be "greened" with food coloring, there will be much bagpipes and celtic music everywhere... I love Irish stuff, I don't know why. But for some reason I've always loved St. Patricks Day. It's just so random. This year it falls on a Saturday, so there will be more hooplah than usual, because people will come in from all over for the celebration. I'm glad I already live downtown and don't have to fight traffic to go to anything. Chris and I will probably just walk around and check things out. Some people will camp out in the squares to get prime spots for the parade.

And this, dear friends, is why I love mid-march. The End.

Epilogue: did I mention I love the end of March because it's Chris and My anniversary? This year we'll be in PORTLAND, OREGON for our anniversary, which is really stellar. Last year we went to NYC. Much enjoyment, indeed!
